TED MICHENER OCAD, OSA

I was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1941 and worked in various jobs including an eye-opening stint at the Stelco Steel Company which convinced me to pursue an alternative vocation. This quest  led me  to enroll at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in 1964.  Upon graduation, I free-lanced with my wife, Patricia, for many years in Toronto and through our agent, Mendola Ltd. in New York. We did countless advertising agency assignments. Our illustrations and editorial cartoons appeared in and on the covers of T.V. Guide, The Globe & Mail, Macleans Magazine, The Financial Times, The Hamilton Spectator and The Toronto Star to name a few. From 1978 until 1990 I taught evenings at my alma mater in Toronto, moving shortly thereafter to St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

I have painted since I was 8 years old, but my fine arts training consists of six summers (as a teen-ager) at the Doon School of Fine Arts near Kitchener, Ontario. In exchange for grounds-keeping duties, I was fortunate enough to receive excellent instruction from some members of the Group of Seven and several other renowned artists of that era.The Ontario College of Art in Toronto was also an enlightening experience for me. It was my projectile into the art world. I now have a beautiful barn-studio right on the ocean in St. Andrews , N.B. were I do my “oils”.

I have received many awards, including a  Society of Illustrators,(in New York),  several Art Direction Certificates, a Hostex Award for Menu Design, Editorial cartooning awards, and a  Canada Council Travel Grant to teach in Bacalar, in the southern end of Mexico. In the winter of 2015 I was Artist in Residence in Bermuda under the Masterworks Foundation program. My one man show at the end of my stay was very well recieved and I managed to sell a record number of paiintings.

I’ve just recently been accepted into the prestigious Ontario Society of Artists and look forward to exhibiting with the truly gifted members from time to time.

Owning and managing The Gables Restaurant (and Gallery) here  in St. Andrews, and doing two editorial cartoons each week, tends to pretty well consume a day, but I still manage to sketch and paint as well, usually as I am hurrying  by the easel.

Well, enough about me...if  you  would like to purchase any of my work, or wish to use me on a  specific project,  just contact me using the contact form on this site,  all the best, and  thanks for your  interest ...
